Remove the Clutter
Sometimes we make rationalizations that keep us trapped and prevent us from clearly seeing the career path before us — "clutter".
Clutter can be cured by making a conscious decision to change. Yes, you may have to give up some things if you are to find career satisfaction — maybe your title or your annual bonus. But are those things worth the lack of fulfillment you feel?
Let's look at some typical clutter:
- "If I change careers, my family will think I'm a failure": No, of course not. They want you to be happy.
- "I don't know anything else": Sure you do. You have inside you a wealth of interests, abilities, skills and ideas that you simply haven't tapped. The task ahead of you is to open your mind to the possibilities and explore.
- Relocation: You love where you live. The kids are settled, you have great friends in a good community. But if you are not happy with your job, sooner or later you may have to consider moving. Something may have to give.
- "I can't give up my security": There is no security! The days of a lifetime job are long over. Your job — the one you've stuck with for so long, through happy and unhappy times — could disappear overnight. True security rests in only one place, and that's you. Not your boss, not your company, not your profession — YOU.
