After 31 years as a classroom teacher, the anticipation and excitement of retirement day was almost too much to take. Surely, my days of leisure and having no worries about anything except my own little world would be the ultimate benefit for all the years I devoted to my profession. Why then, within a year of my having retired, did I feel a growing restlessness, a sense of emptiness and a nagging thought that there had to be more to this next phase of life than this?

It did not take long for me to learn that I, like many other retirees, was going through an all too common phase of retirement. After the initial “honeymoon” period passes, many retirees realize that they need to be doing something useful and fulfilling which the life of constant leisure was not providing for them. As the feeling of “I want to be doing more at this point in life” intensifies, so does the frustration of trying to figure out what to do.

The question of what to do next was one I struggled with for several years. Without any guidance, I spent a lot of time and money investigating one thing after another. The problem was that I never answered for myself the most basic question that has to be addressed first which is “Who am I as a person and what will it take for me to be truly satisfied and fulfilled in my next endeavor?” As a teacher, I thought I already knew everything about myself that I needed to know but the more I searched for something, the more I realized there was a lot about me that I still needed to uncover. Without this self awareness I would have little chance of stumbling onto something that would make me love this point of my life as much or even more than any other.
